What trends in affiliate marketing are specific to the poker space?

by louis

Welcome to Poker Week on the Income Access Blog. This week, we’ll be focusing on a variety of topics, all Poker related, from informative pieces, tips to improve your business model, to promotions. Whether you’re a new affiliate interested in the space, a seasoned affiliate or an operator wanting more insight, you’ll want to check out Poker week on the Income Access blog.

Poker is one of the most popular gaming verticals to promote amongst affiliates. According to our latest study 50% of affiliates surveyed primarily focus on poker. So, what follows will be an exploration of trends in affiliate marketing –that are specific to the poker space.

Brand Promotion
Reputation is important, especially in an industry full of forums, blogs, and various other outlets in which reviews and information is shared. If you’re an operator, you’ll want to think about how your brand is received by the public. After all, when affiliates are choosing a brand to promote, they rely heavily on the brand’s public perception, and the reputation of the poker room. This is because brands with a good reputation convert more easily. As a result, affiliates will want to partner with brands that have a good reputation. Brands that evoke trust in the user are, quite simply are more attractive to perspective players.

Trends in promoting poker amongst affiliates
Most poker affiliates find that loyalty sites are the most effective means to promote poker. This is a form of what’s called “incetivization”: Giving a player “incentive” to be loyal to your brand. Incentivization, however, is not necessarily limited to giving players more money to play with: It might refer to delivery of exclusive content, reviews on poker rooms, exclusive tournaments and freerolls, prize giveaways, or poker bonus codes. The theory is simple: Players who like what you’re giving them will be loyal to your brand. Three promotional methods, in particular, are used to encourage player loyalty in the Poker space. These are (1) rakeback, (2) Freerolls, and (3) Poker Schools.

Rakeback

Rakeback is a strategy that’s especially popular among poker affiliates. It consists of giving players back a percentage of the rake.

  • Advantages of Rakeback
  • Rakeback is attractive to top players, who are very diligent about earning a profit, and look to have every advantage to increase their per hour earnings.  Rakeback sites are uniquely powerful at inspiring loyalty because rakeback can make a significant impact on poker earnings for the player and because rakeback is often not promoted publicly on the poker room’s website, so only through the affiliate site can the player access the rakeback. .  Another benefit is that rakeback is paid by the operator, allowing the affiliate to reward the player without cutting into their own profits.  This model is also very profitable for affiliates because the more a player rakes, the more rakeback they earn, and simultaneously, the more commissions the affiliate earns.
  • Disadvantages of Rakeback
  • While rakeback is a great affiliate tool, it doesn’t benefit operators the same way.  Rakeback is not very profitable for the operator, who is constantly paying out rake.   For more detailed information, please read our rakeback article, part of this series.

Free rolls

Free rolls are a popular way to introduce players to a new brand at no risk (or rather, no investment).. A free roll is a tournament that is free to enter, with a prize pool added by the operator as a marketing expense.

  • Advantage of free rolls
  • Popular with players, no cost to affiliates, and tend to result in a lot of registrations.  A proactive freeroll use might be to publicize an event, such as the Devilfish freeroll which will culminate this week’s blog post series
  • Disadvantage of free rolls
  • A disadvantage of free rolls is that they don’t often result in high deposit rates, since they can attract a lot of “bonus hunters”.

Poker schools

This model is designed to attract players at any level of the game, in the hopes they will become high level players later.

  • Advantage of poker schools
  • The advantage of poker schools is that there are a lot of options for generating content (poker strategy is complex and offers infinite options for opinions and incite), and that poker operators like these sites because they can result in high value players at a lower acquisition cost.

  • Disadvantage of poker schools
  • Disadvantages are that conversion rates may be lower because you are intercepting the player earlier in the life cycle, so there may be a lot of “window shopping.”

Affiliate program tools and features that will assist in your success
A successful affiliate program will offer affiliates a variety of tools to assist affiliates in their business. These tools include; bonus codes, XML feeds of poker tournaments, offering affiliates’ players regular private buy-in poker tournaments and the standard gif, flash and text marketing tools and all of these tools work together to assist greatly with conversions. The Damn Small Poker tool made by Trebax Innovations allows the affiliate’s traffic to play poker straight away within the banner and then once their credit has expired get directed to their preferred operator with exclusive sign up offers.
