UIGEA created a landscape of turmoil and strife for online operators facing the US nearly 3 years ago. Since this time there have been politicians and industry players lobbying to counteract this act, which in truth has made for interesting speculation - Is the US going to legalise igaming or what?
News from Harrah’s stating that they launched their Harrah’s Interactive Entertainment (HIE) group in May and the activism by its new CEO for igaming in the US has raised curiosity again for those following the sector. From Garber’s perspective, the onus is on the industry to demonstrate that it that can ‘be properly regulated, and that the technology exists to alleviate concerns about money laundering or age verification’.
Other developments that are pushing anti UIGEA include; Barney Frank’ s bill, EU pressure and legal action from Interactive Media and Gaming Association. With Barney Frank’s anti- UIGEA bill it is suggested that it could be voted on in September – after all the good old folks from congress come back from summer break.
Over the years we have seen different forms of activism come and go. So, at the end of the day who the ‘bleep’ knows? All we can do is have playful speculation: Less than year, five years or never. What are your thoughts?
